How to Use Catnip

Looking for fun, natural ways to enrich your cat's environment? Catnip and valerian root are two powerful herbs that can boost your cat’s mood, encourage play, and even help them relax. Whether you're new to using these botanicals or just want fresh ideas, here are a few easy ways to incorporate them into your cat’s routine.

If your cat doesn’t respond to catnip, valerian root is a fantastic alternative.

Sprinkle Method

  • Sprinkle a small pinch (around 1 teaspoon) of catnip on your cat’s favorite play area, scratching post, or bedding to encourage playful and relaxed behaviour.

Toys

  • Stuff a small fabric pouch or toy with valerian root for a mess-free way to let your cat enjoy the scent.

Catnip Spray or Valerian Spray (use the same method for both)

  • Add 1 teaspoon of valerian root to 1 cup of boiling water.
  • Let steep for 10–15 minutes, then cool completely.
  • Strain and pour the liquid into a spray bottle.
  • Lightly mist toys, bedding, or scratching posts (avoid over-saturation).

Tips for Use

  • Supervise your cat during play and remove catnip if they become overly excited.
  • Store catnip in a cool, dry place to maintain freshness.
  • Rotate or limit catnip exposure to keep the experience exciting for your cat.

Whether you're helping your cat wind down or liven up, catnip and valerian root offer natural enrichment that cats adore. Try a few of these methods and see which one your feline friend loves best!
